People, men and women, have been selling sex for as long as history has been recorded. Fables, myths and legends tell us it has been happening even before history was recorded. It is said to be the oldest profession in the world. While in today’s world it is deemed illegal in most places and thought of as the domain of the morally compromised, it has not always been so. Prostitution, or the sale of sex, was thought of as just another job. Depending on where you are in the world today, it may not carry quite as harsh a criticism among the public as it once did. Different countries and cultures vary in their views of prostitution. No matter where you are, however, sex is sold in a variety of ways. The terms prostitute, call girl, escort, and hooker are all used to describe a person who sells sex. The question is, What’s the difference between an escort, call girl, hooker, & prostitute?

What is Prostitution?

Prostitution is the act of selling sex or a sex act. It can be called penetration, copulation, and intercourse. It is sex in its most basic form, but it is also any act such as oral sex and digital penetration. Selling, trading or bartering with these types of acts is prostitution. This includes trading sex for financial or commercial gain and even for an opportunity. That secretary that sleeps her way to the top is engaging in prostitution whether or not one single cent is exchanged. It is mostly thought to be conducted by women throughout history. Most likely, because women have had fewer opportunity to make a legal income throughout history. A prostitute may work alone, or she may have a pimp, which is someone who take a percentage of the money she brings in and offers protection in exchange.

What is a Hooker?

A hooker is a derogatory term for a woman who is into prostitution. Just the same as a prostitute, she will work alone or with a pimp to sell her body and sexual favors for cash, drugs or food. Prostitutes and hookers are thought to be the lowest level of the prostitution business. These people are thought to be drug addicts and violent offenders. As far back as 18th Century BCE, women have engaged in this behavior as is witnessed in ancient documents such as the Code of Hammurabi in which provisions were set to provide prostitutes protection for their inheritances.

What is an Escort?

A strange distinction is made between certain types of prostitution workers. Hookers are thought to be almost a lower life form for their practices, while other workers in the field, escorts, are held to a higher standard. Escorts do not have pimps, but they do not always work for themselves either. Most escorts work for an escort service. The service advertises for the escorts via all the traditional methods including websites, newspaper and magazine ads. Escorts don’t always perform sex acts. They are often hired simply to escort a client to social functions or just to dinner. They are a higher caliber of prostitute because services only hire escorts that are attractive, clean and well-dressed. They have a classy demeanor despite selling their bodies.

What is a call girl?

Call girls are much the same as an escort. They may or may not work for a service. They are attractive, clean women with a sense of elegance and sophistication. Call girls and escorts cost quite a bit more than you’ll find from a street hooker or prostitute. Even if no sex is involved. Hiring an escort or call girl is more like hiring a skilled professional than a shade tree mechanic. You pay for the pleasure of her company, her sparkling with and personality, and her extraordinary beauty as much as for any sex that may occur.

Prostitution is illegal in most of the United States (Great Article About It), no matter which type of avenue you choose. Nevada is the only state where prostitution is legal and that is only in a specific area. You will find escort services in every state, however, because they may or may not offer sex. It is up to the client to take precautions if he is engaging in illegal activity.
